GC - Games Convention 2008 still scheduled for Leipzig - Image 1

In concentrated efforts to address visitors’ complaints after GC 2007, Leipziger Messe GmbH has officially announced that it has absolutely revamped both air and rail traffic to main routes leading to Leipzig. This is all in preparation for the GC – Games Convention 2008 event that it has slated for the city now considered a popular trade show venue.

And yes, the GC – Games Convention – the official name for the massive European gaming event – is still arriving at Leipzig, Germany, despite rumors and speculations that Leipziger Messe might move the gaming trade fair out of the city. This was after the company received notable feedback that the traffic entering and exiting the city was too congested to accommodate attendees back in GC 2007.

Now, Leipziger Messe has added six extra flight charters in and out of the city to multiple major airports in Amsterdam, Helsinki, London (Luton included), Munich, Paris (Le Bourget included), and Vienna. These flights are scheduled to depart their locations at August 19 and 20 for Leipzig, while flights headed out of the city are scheduled for August 21 and 22.

The organizers are also bringing back the GC-special rail transit service, though this time around they’re including specially-priced deals for those familiar with the Deutsche Bahn express train. They have also expanded their land transportation service by adding dedicated coach services for both visitors and members of the press.

These coaches, under the “Connect GC” project, will be stationed in more than 30 German towns and will depart for Leipzig on August 22 and 23 – just time for the final days of the fair. That’s where fun, games, and programs dot the busy fair schedule. As a refresher, the GC – Games Convention 2008 will start at August 21, a Thursday, and will last all the way up to August 24, a Sunday.

OMG it's here: NVIDIA launches GeForce 9800GX2 - Image 1

Large on the enthusiast scene today is the official launching of NVIDIA’s top-of-the-line graphics card, the GeForce 9800GX2. Designed to outperform the once revered 8800 Ultra and even besting the 9800GTX, the dual graphics card is currently shaking down the most hardcore of enthusiast hardware sites.

And you can bet early adopters the world over are probably upping clocks, cooling solutions, and egos like there’s no tomorrow.

As reported before, the NVIDIA GeForce 9800GX2 is history remade: it’s a GF 7950GX2 with dual G92-spec graphics processing units. But unlike the dual-GPU GF 7 series card, the 9800GX2 also carries superior power management technology. In fact, its touted Hybrid Power mode can pull down the 9800GX2’s power consumption while the personal is not running applications using 3d graphics.

But that’s only if you pull the ESA feature out with an NVIDIA-based motherboard. Other stock features of the GeForce 9800GX2 are:

  • Processor Cores: 256 (128 per GPU)
  • Core Clock: 600 MHz
  • Shader Clock: 1500 MHz
  • Memory Clock: 1000 MHz
  • Memory: 1 GB DDR3 (512 MB per GPU)
  • Power Connection: SATA 2.0 standard, 1 x 6 pin SATA power 1 x 8-pin SATA power connectors
  • Power Drawn From Board: 197W
  • Thermal Cooling Solution: Patent Pending Integrated Cooling Solution
  • Interfaces: 2 x DVI-DL, 1 x HDMI
  • Other Optional: 1 x HDMI audio connection, 1 x SLI connection

Currently, the card sells for at least US 650, and pricier, more powerful overclocked editions are starting to roll out in limited numbers. You would probably be better off grabbing double 8800GTs, since it’s obviously much cheaper than a single 9800GX2. But for the enthusiasts who we know exist out there, 9800GX2’s the card to have – now or never.

Sierra Entertainment - Image 1

The touted merger between publishers Activision and Vivendi might not be all rainbows and butterflies for everyone involved. A report has recently recommended that Vivendi’s veteran Sierra Entertainment label may have to take a back seat to Activision management.

In “The Cut Scene” blog over at Variety, Ben Fritz states that sources close to the matter are saying that the merger will mean changes for a lot of Vivendi labels. While star devs Blizzard are certainly unmovable, everyone else including Sierra may have to conform to some serious changes.

“Activision obviously made the deal to get its hands on the biggest MMO, and really the biggest game, in the industry (World of Warcraft),” comments Fritz. He says that all other Vivendi properties are practical afterthoughts whose makers will be affected in one way or another when the dust settles.

He continues “until the merger is technically complete, work proceeds as usual, but once it’s over, Activision will start making some decisions”. He then stated that it’s “unlikely” that everything in Sierra will go on care about it used to.

Fritz seals his case by comparing the situation to a new management taking over a film studio. He says some projects will inevitably get killed or changed as the handlers see fit. This is certainly an interesting prediction worth keeping an open eye out for.

Fable 2 artwork - Image 1One thing that can really grate on a gamer’s patience is that of an unannounced release date for a highly-anticipated game. Fortunately for gamers in the United Kingdom, Play.com has spilled the beans regarding the release dates for games of various platforms.

Apparently, Play.com gave away booklets at the Wembley Arena last weekend. Besides promising 5 off on the games in question, the booklet also indicated when the games would be released in the UK.

Here is a listing of the specific UK release dates for the following titles, according to Play.com:

  • Fable 2 (Xbox 360, PC) by Lionhead Studios – Might 30
  • Ghostbusters: The Video Game (PC, PS3, Xbox 360, DS) by Sierra Entertainment – September 26
  • Prototype (PC, PS3, Xbox 360) by Radical Entertainment – June 27
  • Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Conspiracy (PS3, Xbox 360) by Sierra Entertainment – June 27
  • Ninja Gaiden 2 (Xbox 360) by Team Ninja – March 28
  • Iron Man (PC, PS3, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii) by Sega – Might 30
  • WALL-E (PC, PS3, PSP, Wii, DS, Xbox 360) – May 4
  • Lego Batman: The Video Game (PC, PS3, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii, DS) by Warner Bros. Interactive – “sometime in September”

Before you jump for joy, a caveat: things might change between now and the projected dates mentioned above, so don’t take the list as the end all and be all of information. Also, if you do not see a game listed for a particular platform above, it doesn’t mean that that game won’t be coming out for that platform.

Starcraft 2 - Image 1Blizzard tends to take its time when making sequels, but when the games do come out, the world explodes,” so they say.

That appears to be what Blizzard has in mind for StarCraft 2. In fact, Lead Producer Chris Sigaty talked a tiny bit about three different aspects of the sequel’s development in three separate videos.

First, Blizzard has been making an effort to recapture the magic of the original StarCraft – micromanagement and fast-paced action involving humongous armies. At the same time, the company has also been making changes to the sequel. The key apparently lies in the company’s willingness to listen to player feedback regarding the game.

Sigaty also admitted that the Blizzard team working on StarCraft 2 is actually the same team that worked on Warcraft 3. While the team has learned some lessons from their Warcraft experience, Sigaty stated that the StarCraft franchise has noticeably deviated from its counterpart. For example, StarCraft 2 eschews hero mechanics in favor of what Sigaty calls “micro heavy big army fighting,” yet it borrows from the User Interface of Warcraft 3.

Lastly, Sigaty also referred to how the Zerg have evolved since Brood War. All Zerg units are now capable of burrowing. Old units like the Queen and the Ultralisk have gotten power upgrades. For example, Zerg Queens now possess the ability to heal buildings and to turn them into defensive structures. Ultralisks’ attacks now have an AoE effect to them.

These are but some of the topics that Sigaty discussed. For more information on such topics as battle.net features and customization in StarCraft 2, why not watch the videos below?
