If you’re in the market for a smartphone, you might want to take a look at the new BlackBerry offering from Research in Motion: the Pearl 8120. So what does the Pearl have that others don’t? Undead pirates. Get it? Blackberry Pearl? Undead pirates? Never mind.
The BlackBerry 8120 separates itself from its 2110 and 8130 siblings by kicking it up a notch for its business clientele, substituting Wi-Fi access for GPS connectivity.
The feature’s great for those whose businesses (or pleasure) takes them all over the globe. The Pearl bagged AT&T as its Wi-Fi carrier, the same carrier that Apple got for the iPhone.
Aside from the Wi-Fi access, the Pearl also has improved multimedia capabilities that only the later 8130 phones once enjoyed like an externally accessible microSD/SDHC slot, and a 2 megapixel camera. It also has Bluetooth support for headsets, vehicle kits, and the like.
The Blackberry Pearl 8120 is available for business customers at US 199.99, with a two-year contract. You can also get a subscription to AT&T’s Mobile Music too.

In Afghanistan, mobile companies have been following an unconventional practice from the hours of 5 p.m. until 7 a.m. Due to several threats issued by the Taliban movement, these companies have been forced to close down operations at night to avoid attacks from the real-life terrorist group.
The threats were issued a month ago, when the Taliban accused mobile companies for working in conjunction with NATO troops to target them. Since then, up to ten mobile phone towers have been attacked, six of them totally destroyed.
Currently, the four Afghan mobile phone companies have been complying with the Taliban’s demands to close down operations every night. However, telecommunications ministry spokesman Abdul Hadi Hadi has been asking the government to resist the Taliban pressure.
This is slowly becoming a concern among many of the Afghans living in the affected areas. Since mobile phones are the sole means of communication in some of the more remote regions, many are expressing complaints about the inconvenience this situation is causing.

Hot on the heels of the warmly-received Gothic 3 – The Beginning’s success, independent mobile games developer HandyGames announced its plans to invade the Nintendo DS.
Don’t hope for anything new yet for your favorite Nintendo handheld. As part of their medium-term vision, HandyGames will just port its successful mobile games including Panzer Tactics, My Model Train, and Townsmen or Flitzer among others to the DS.
But that’s not a bad deal altogether. Remember when anticipation for Gothic 3 was high even before its release? HandyGames delivered on that, showing the company’s capable of good things. And hey, the devs are here for the long haul too. CEO Christopher Kassulke just described their Nintendo DS venture as a “good long-term business model.”

Soon after Finland-based Nokia announced to close its factory in Bochum, Germany, the North Rhine-Westphalia state government demands US 92 million in subsidies plus interest from the world-leading mobile phone maker. Nokia reportedly used US 63 million of that amount build the factory it now intends to close.
The North Rhine-Westphalia Bank wants the cash by March 31. According to the say economy ministry, Nokia failed to meet its condition of creating enough jobs since 2002. Nokia promptly denied the claims, saying the company “not only fulfilled the conditions of the agreement, it exceeded them.”
Around 2,300 employees are expected to be laid off when Nokia’s factory in Germany closes. While 6 of Nokia’s handsets come from that area, the factory accounted for 23 of Nokia’s global labor costs. And because of the uncommon outweighing of fund input versus product output, Nokia decided to shut its doors.

Realizing that selling Linux-based personal via brick-and-mortar stores just isn’t as effective as distributing them through on the web sales, retail giant Wal-Mart has pulled out stocks of Everest’s Green gPC, powered by open-source operating system Linux. “This really wasn’t what our customers were looking for,” stated Wal-Mart’s spokesperson Melissa O’Brien. Wal-Mart had decided to stock their stores with the Linux computers as a test whether or not the computers will take off.
As a failed experiment, US 199 Green gPC just weren’t flying off the retail shelves as much as it did when it was sold online. As Wal-Mart’s first attempt to sell them from retail shelves – Wal-Mart stocked about 600 stores with the Linux-preloaded computers – the Everest gPCs didn’t take off as well as personal pre-loaded with Windows. The in-store gPC inventory wasn’t restocked.
Computers with Linux operating systems are actually a popular choice for server personal, though the operating system is yet to fully break into the home personal market currently being dominated by personal pre-loaded with Microsoft and Apple OS.
