Computer game addicts may reflect some AS type characteristics - Image 1 It’s interesting what eye-opening findings psychological studies come up with sometimes. On one hand, you have studies disputing the link between video game violence and aggression. Other studies such as the one conducted by Dr. John Charlton and Ian Danforth, however, have found something else: computer game addicts share some personality traits with people with Asperger Syndrome (AS).

How exactly did Charlton and Danforth find out? Simple: they questioned 391 personal game players, 86 of which were male. The researchers considered the relationship between addiction, personality, and what the social scientists termed as “high engagement.”

Charlton and Danforth discovered three personality traits in addicted players that are normally associated with people with AS: neuroticism, lack of extraversion and lack of agreeableness.

Nevertheless, the researchers clarified that these gamers are not classifiable as having Asperger syndrome per se; rather, they merely share some of the same characteristics as those who do have it. This is because the gamers find it easier to empathize with computer systems rather than with other people.

According to Dr. Charlton, one may think of gamers lying somewhere along a spectrum:

The thinking in the field is that there is a scale along which people, even those considered to be normal , can be put upon. And that people such as engineers, mathematicians and computer scientists are nearer to the non-empathising, systemising, end of the spectrum, with people with Aspergers syndrome even further along again.

Our research supports the idea that people who are heavily involved in game playing may be nearer to autistic spectrum disorders than people who have no interest in gaming.

Video games only have a few months to succeed - Image 1There’s been news that video games are more popular than sex for people in the UK. Just what makes video games popular and successful in the market?

Well, you could consider its gameplay, story, music, and a whole lot more. Even with all of those factors put into the equation, one analyst believes time plays a vital role. According to Pacific Crest Securities’ senior research analyst Evan Wilson, time could either make or break a video game that’s just been released into the market.

According to Wilson, video games only have a limited time to succeed. He explained this, saying that the average game has only “a few months” before the industry moves on.

With countless games being released on a yearly basis, this statement could probably serve as a reason why some games reach the top and others don’t. As the gaming industry moves forward, it’s really difficult for video games to stay with the flow and rise above the competition.

Lego Indiana Jones cracking his trademark bullwhip - Image 1Will the key scenes from the Indiana Jones movies be featured in the game? What about the various supporting characters from the films? These are just a couple of questions that Indiana Jones fans may have about Traveller’s Tales’ Lego Indiana Jones: The Video Game (PS3, Personal computer, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii, DS). Fortunately, the game’s associate producer, Kellam Eanes, took the time to answer both queries in a recent interview.

According to Eanes, Dr. Jones’ allies will also have their own special capabilities to assist them in the adventure. For example, female characters such as Marion Ravenwood and Willie Scott will be able to double jump (Scott has a Black Canary-type scream that shatters glass, too.). Satipo and Sallah will be able to dig up buried objects. Still others can reportedly fix broken machinery and even decipher codes.

What about the scenes that older Indy fans have grown to love? Eanes stated that Traveller’s Tales has done its ideal to capture classic movie scenes in-game. The developer, however, has opted to retell them in a new way. The idea behind the retelling is to appeal to new fans of Lego Indiana Jones: The Video Game and to older fans of the motion picture series as well.

And in case you’re wondering, Eanes stated that you can even beat up on the ditzy Marcus Brody if you wish. Also, be sure to keep your eyes out for the (in)famous chilled monkey brain dessert from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

SwiftShader logo - Image 1Known for its video game portability technology, TransGaming Technologies just announced that it will launch SwiftShader 2.0 to help developers create graphics on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X using the software-based 3D rendering system. Given the available multi-core CPUs in the market, this version of SwiftShader promises a convenient drop-in solution which broadens the playing field.

Through press wire, TransGaming Technologies said that SwiftShader 2.0 grants software written for DirectX to use software rendering with no changes to the source code. Supposedly, it can render games like Half-Life 2 entirely in software.

With “casual game developers and others requiring software graphics” in mind, the upcoming engine can create 3D graphics on both dated desktop computers and high-end machines.

A demo of the rendering system is available for download, and those who are interested in acquiring SwiftShader 2.0 for an efficient rendering system with DirectX 8 and 9 class features can visit TransGaming Technologies’ website which you can find below.
