FCC proposes SMS-based emergency messaging system - Image 1Aside from being a possible reference for court cases, it appears that the U.S. government’s found another handy use for the country’s growing amount of SMS.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has recently unveiled its proposal to establish a nationwide alert system that will use text messaging system for cellphones and other mobile devices.

According to the FCC, this messaging system would be carried by volunteer cell phone companies, who would in turn relay one of several text messages to their subscribers during an emergency.

The FCC’s emergency messaging system is further expected to handle three particular events: Disasters that directly affect American Citizens (ex. terrorist attacks), imminent or ongoing threats such as hurricanes or earthquakes, and child abductions.

At the moment, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint Nextel, and AT&T have announced their interest in joining the FCC’s messaging system. These providers will in turn be receiving the messages they’ll deliver from a yet-to-be-named agency.

All volunteer message carriers are expected to be ready for the alert system’s requirements within 10 months.

Banner of Develop 100 - Image 1

One hundred of the world’s top game development studios were recently listed on the fourth annual Develop 100. The book was published by Sheridans, amBX, and the editorial team for Develop magazine, the leading international publication for games developers.

Based on the numbers released earlier this year, it’s no surprise that Nintendo took the top spot in the 2008 edition of the Develop 1000. EA Canada comes in behind Nintendo after enjoying the top place in the previous three editions of the book.

The results of the Develop 100 also showed growth in many of the European studios and other development teams in the UK. It was also noted that there were widely reported pressures from low-cost development centers in Canada, with 12 studios making up 221 million (US 437 million) in terms of revenues.

There’s also a free digital edition of the listing, which can be viewed through the source link that we’ve provided below.

Word 'Gaming' to disappear by 2020 - Image 1As a concluding activity to the MI6 game marketing conference, top dogs of the gaming industry joined in a panel. The moderator was analyst Michael Pachter, with the panelists being Nolan Bushnell, Alex St. John, Peter Moore, Kathy Vrabeck, and Laurent Detoc.

Ubisoft North American president Detoc started the discussion by speaking about how the consumer would be like in the future. He said that by making games more accessible, more people turn into gamers.

He continued on by saying that games aren’t able to reinvent itself that much – “it gets better, but it’s not newer.” He concluded by saying that games are evolutionary and not revolutionary.

Peter Moore continued this discussion by saying that he sees a future in motion. He said that games that cater to health and wellness are only the tip of the iceberg. There’s still a lot more left to be discovered when people play in their living rooms in the future.

Since he was talking about motion, Moore said more of his claims about the future. He stated, “By the time we get to 2020 we’ll be on par with any entertainment that’s ever existed. The word ‘gaming’ will disappear.”

Alongside this disappearing act of the word, Alex St. John made a strong statement on one of the things that’ll be gone in the gaming industry. He said that the console business will be disappearing as well. He reasons that “a console is designed to prevent you from playing games that you didn’t pay for.” Unlike World of Warcraft, however, it can’t be stolen. He concluded that “consoles go away,” eventually at least.

Well, these are certainly interesting views and concepts about the future of gaming. What do you guys think? Feel free to comment below to agree or disagree with the statements mentioned above.
