Behind many triple A titles of this generation that boasts of impressive facial animations is Image Metrics. With Rockstar, Konami, Midway, and even Sony in its client list, the company’s technology made its way to the forefront of 3D facial movement animation. Those who are interested in the convincingly real expressions behind Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, and Unreal Tournament 3 can now take a look behind the scenes.
The Personal Graphics Society has an extensive feature that aims to take everyone by hand through the processes of Image Metrics’ popular technology. CGSociety shed light on many interesting facets of production, from the early stages of capturing motions, building a huge library of images and animations, to creating video with in-betweens and final touches.
There’s a lot to learn for the uninitiated. For starters, Image Metrics can be quite overwhelming with its ability to track each movement and the smallest details such as contours and shape of the mouth, the eyes, the size of the pupils and the position of the brows frame by frame. Other powerful tools will then be used to edit motion captures, and grant directors to faithfully render what they imagine.

As if the Gerstmann controversy wasn’t enough, Eidos Interactive and IO Interactive’s Kane & Lynch: Dead Men is caught in another storm. This time around, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned the game’s advertising campaign for its “graphic” and “shocking” display of violence.
ASA has already received 26 complaints for the print and broadcast ads for Kane & Lynch: Dead Men (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC). One of these is a double-page magazine spread featuring a gagged and crying woman. Another one is a TV spot showing suggestive sounds of a throat being cut and a rifle butt being slammed on someone’s head.
In defense of these ads, Eidos is maintaining that the ads were meant to be cinematic rather than offensive. The developers even pointed out that the gagged woman wasn’t harmed in the print ad.
Kane & Lynch: Dead Men, which hit the stores November of last year, is already shooting a motion picture adaptation. If the ads were violent enough already, the movie most definitely won’t be something else. Updates here at QJ.NET as we get them.
