Diablo 3 - Image 1Remember when Blizzard surprised the gaming community with StarCraft 2? Well, we at QJ.NET have learned our lesson and have been keeping tabs on all of Blizzard’s movements to the best of our capability. The latest news is that Blizzard has acquired the Diablo3.com domain.

This news was announced by the former webmaster of Diablo3.com. He said that Blizzard was going to be taking over and that they are “being really cool about it.” It makes one wonder how much cash Blizzard coughed up to get the domain name.

Were going to go out on a limb by saying that perhaps the company is gearing up for Diablo 3. Although knowing Blizzard, we might not see the game for another two years or so. Still, we’re hoping that they’ve been developing the game under wraps and will pull another StarCraft 2 on us.

An example of in-game advertising from Doom 3 - Image 1Ask any person about in-game advertising, and chances are you’ll get a variety of responses. Certain people like Jon Epstein of Double Fusion are understandably supportive of it, while others, like Nolan Bushnell, don’t think it’ll work.

According to Bushnell, it’s the nature of the in-game ads that works against them:

In-game advertising is much, much more [in your face] advertising and is more like a billboard. I don t believe those kinds of ads are very effective. In a game, if you re not riveted on the objectives, you re going to lose.

Nevertheless, Bushnell has admitted that there s opportunity in the casual games business. In fact, he currently serves as an advisor to NeoEdge, a Silicon Valley company that focuses on incorporating ads in casual games.

The difference is that NeoEdge’s ads may come before, during or after a gaming session – much like TV ads. The ads are reportedly not hidden in the environment, unlike most cases today.

Eden Games' Herv Sliwa: inspiration and innovation on Alone in the Dark, five screens - Image 1Making a game realistic is definitely one difficult endeavor, but nonetheless an enjoyable one. Eden Games‘ Herv Sliwa, talks about the things the he went through while making Alone in the Dark 5 (PS3, PS2, Personal computer, Xbox 360, Wii), such as inspiration and innovation.

Much of the inspiration for the game came from TV series like 24, Lost, and Prison Break. They pursued which way was the ideal to tell the game’s story. These Television shows provided a good guide for the game’s over-all length. Hence, the game’s episodic structure.

Another source for Sliwa’s inspiration was J. J. Abrams, the man behind Lost and Alias. Abrams’ idea called the magic box, used for creating different plot twists, was Sliwa’s main source of inspiration.

Sliwa wanted people to get hooked to the game. Through playing, Sliwa hopes that these people could find the game more interesting than a movie. It is the game’s interactivity that enables people to be inside the story itself, to be part of it.

In order to reach that type of gameplay, they tried to mix innovation, action, new gameplay and make it enjoyable for everyone. One of the highlights in the game is the variety feature in it. They tried to blend in various elements, things that you can find in a full-blown adventure story while maintaining a good narrative.

They were able to distinguish the things they needed to put into the game. The only problem was, they had difficulty putting them together. Still, they were successful in putting everything in style. They broke a few traditional gaming rules and added some real world rules. This certainly will make things interesting for gamers out there.

Simply put, there are no specific rules in the game. All that limits you is your imagination. This is the result of how they were able to put various elements together. So, when you find yourself walking in the dark and come face to face with a fiend, go wild. Do everything you can think of. Just keep in mind that the game is as close to the rules of the reality.

The screenshots we’ve provided in the article serve as a little teaser on the game. It shows just how realistic Alone in the Dark is going to be. Enjoy!

Infogrames - Image 1It may have taken some patience but it’s finally done. According to a press release, Infogrames has acquired Atari for US 11 million. If you could remember, Infogrames offered a buy-out proposal as early as March in light of Atari’s financial struggles.

Prior to making the deal, Atari hired a new CEO and sought a deadline extension on the Infogrames offer to explore all possible options. With Atari’s agreement, Infogrames will acquire all the remaining outstanding equity interests of Atari (computed at US 11 million). In return, Atari will now become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Infogrames.

Here are specifics of the agreement:

  • brings to a close a period of financial underperformance for Atari;
  • strengthens Atari under Infogrames’ new management team;
  • delivers a platform for future growth in the US; and
  • offers Atari shareholders an all cash exit.

How will this turn out for the classic gaming brand that’s Atari? We are about to find out. Meanwhile, keep posted here at QJ.NET for the latest gaming developments.

Let’s take a look at what’s changed from the last patch, and see if we’re going to have to rethink our strategy some when it comes to specific weapons and automobiles.

In any case, here’s the full changelog for Patch 2.301:

On the internet
Resolved a game arbitration issue when the game resulted in a sync error.

Maps Changes

  • Several map weather settings have been tuned.
  • The Scheldt – Two bridges to centre island replaced with land bridges.
  • Hochwald Gap – Tweaked territory near bridge crossings, widened bridge crossings from each base, removed a large number of fx markers.
  • St. Mere Dumont – several buildings replaced so window facings are more equitable between north and south facing.
  • St. Mere Dumont – moved some fuel points to prevent them from being captured on the wrong side of a wall.
  • Wrecked Train – cleared some debris from the center of the map
  • Wrecked Train – removed some tank traps blocking access to one of the fuel points
  • Langres – Moved one of the strategic points slightly. Rebalanced VP locations slightly so that both have equal coverage from defensive buildings.
  • Beaux Lowlands – Updated to 3 VPs
  • Beaux Lowlands – replaced high munition point with strategic point.
  • Sturzdorf – bottom player has one extra ramp up to the high fuel area.
  • Minor pathing changes to Linden to enable Kettens to capture a point.
  • Verriers Ridge – added version of map with no repairable bunkers (playable with Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts).

Certainly a very long one indeed, and it seems that players will have to change up their game plan some in order to accommodate. We have the ability to certainly see some online skirmishes having their obvious turnout be changed by the gameplay changes above. In any case, updates as we get them, and good luck with the patching!
