EA's John Riccitiello: Ship time to give way to quality - Image 1

Electronic Arts‘ CEO John Riccitiello says that 2008 will be a change for the superstar publisher, as they plan to resolve the disappointment over the publisher’s game scores back in 2007. At a recent press conference hosted by EA, Riccitiello also opined that his overall preference between ship time and quality would favor quality:

I would state without hesitation that our quality is going to be up this year versus the prior year. I would say without hesitation that our ship timing is going to be improved versus the prior year.

Previously, EA took a licking from observations on Metacritic ratings – the publisher’s games only averaged at about 77 in review ratings. Riccitiello’s new goal is to raise that average to 80 by 2011.

If better games are coming this year, should we expect them to be delayed? Nothing’s written in stone yet, and even EA’s top brass stated that there are processes currently underway to improve on timeliness as well. However, they’ve still got a long way to go.

Riccitiello recently advocated the idea of “city-state” concepts back in DICE 08, and then put it to work within the superstar publisher’s corporate operations. Since then, it has stirred up quite a storm within EA’s walls.

With it came DICE’s newfound confidence to pitch the free-to-play Battlefield Heroes to EA – a first in, well, the publisher’s history – and even instantly hushed brash whispers of “soul-sucking” within the company. The city-state model kept the developers independent in a sense, and gave them room to expand their creative horizons.

But will this new plan begin incurring similar and surprising results? We have the rest of the fiscal year of 2008 to observe, and perhaps some of 2009 as well. More updates as we get them.

Mass Effect PC - Image 1BioWare CEO Ray Muzyaka was recently interviewed regarding the Personal computer version of Mass Effect (the game is also available on the Xbox 360).

While he didn’t speak about the authentication scheme issue in Mass Effect that upset quite a number of gamers, he did explain why the game was first released on the Xbox 360 as well as what content gamers can anticipate in terms of content in the game.

Muzyaka explained why the game was released on the Xbox 360 first. He pointed out that the Mass Effect was originally designed to be an Xbox 360 exclusive from the get go. Late into the game’s development, a decision was made to bring it to Personal computers as well.

Talking of the Computer version, you might recall that the game will be getting its first downloadable content, Bring Down the Sky, for free. Muzyaka stated that we should anticipate to see more post-release content in the future:

Oh yeah, we have large plans for post-release content with the franchise for both Xbox 360 and PC. We haven’t released any details on that yet but it’s something we want to actively support.

In addition, he also shared a few thoughts on the possibility of a Mass Effect game on the PlayStation 3. While he didn’t specifically state that the game (or its sequel) might be going cross-platform, he didn’t deny it either:

We’re not commenting on any platform extensions… we’re not really speaking about future titles. But, you know, Mass Effect is Xbox 360-exclusive, Microsoft is a great partner, we’re bringing Mass Effect now to PC and we’re going to make sure it’s a great experience for our Personal computer fans.

In the future on other products, we’re a division of Electronic Arts now, and we’re working on all the different platforms across the board, pretty much.

So there you’ve it, more information about EA and BioWare’s Mass Effect. Gamers who are interested in what Muzyaka thinks about the current state of the gaming platforms in the market may want to check out the interview in full. Just follow our source link to get there.

Assassin's Creed movie, Cloverfield game, more - Image 1How does a Cloverfield game grab you? How about an Assassin’s Creed motion picture? We’d love either one, maybe even both. Too bad we can only label these as rumors for now.

In the latest UK Official PlayStation Mag (the same one that gave Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots a solid 10 rating), they also dished out some juicy new rumors.

And yes, the first two we mentioned are part of the rumors. We’d love a Cloverfield game – as long is it doesn’t give us motion sickness. An Assassin’s Creed movie would be awesome too.

One of the other rumors they suggested is a sequel to The Darkness (PS3, Xbox 360). This was debunked by the devs earlier, but who’s to say they weren’t just buying time? Another rumor is a new game called Spyborgs from Capcom.

The last rumor concerns the sequel to Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, which the mag states will be set in the jungles and temples in India. An interesting choice. While we want to speak more on this one, it’ll be pretty pointless at this point since it’s still a rumor.

We’ll let you know if and when any of these are confirmed, so check back for more updates!

Rockstar Games - Image 1Although Take-Two is still busy fending off Electronic Artshostile takeover bid, Rockstar Games’ Sam Houser apparently sees some appeal in working under EA’s umbrella.

The reason appears mainly to be John Riccitiello. In a current interview with the Wall Street Journal, Houser called the EA CEO “the real deal”. Riccitiello has also expressed interest in Rockstar Games even before becoming EA’s CEO.

Houser also mentioned that an EA alliance would result in Rockstar being a “much smaller fish in a much bigger pond”, adding that he’s “not someone who has any kind of problem with that.”

Be that as it might, Houser said that if they ever work with EA, Rockstar would most likely still maintain its autonomy, a setup similar to Blizzard’s in the Activision-Vivendi merger.

Prince of Persia, Resident Evil 5 details surface from Game Informer magazine - Image 1

The June issue of Game Informer magazine for this year may have clued in on how Activision is trying to imitate Electronic Arts’ Rock Band in the instrument department, but it also dropped a couple more jaws when images of what appeared to be two Resident Evil 2 characters were seen at a piece covering Capcom’s Resident Evil 5 (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360).

The revelations hover over a couple of never-before seen screenshots from the zombie horror shooter, which were published alongside text reminiscent of Jun Takeuchi’s exclusive interview with Famitsu some time back.

One shot showed an overhead shot of a female character in the game that Game Informer assumes is Claire Redfield. Another revealed Chris holding up a blonde-haired girl, which the magazine says could be Sherry Birkin.

In another piece, Ubisoft also claimed to have overhauled combat for the stylized Prince of Persia (DS, PlayStation 3, Windows, Xbox 360). Swordfights will be kept to a one-on-one deal this time, probably like the original Prince of Persia.

Inon Zur, the award-winning composer behind SOCOM II’s and Crysis’ music, will be hopping into the development team to create the game’s soundtrack, and there’s talk that actions will now have their dedicated buttons (or keys).

So anticipate attacks to emerge from one button, a jump from another, and a general interact-with-environment action from yet another button. More updates as we get them.
