Final Fantasy Agito 13 - Image 1A statement from Square Enix big boss Yoichi Wada has led to questions about the future of Final Fantasy Agito 13. During a company shareholder meeting last week, Wada revealed that one of their mobile games has been put on hold:

Concerning the title that connects to the home console, development has been ceased as it is unsuitable at the current time.

The “connects to the console” part seems to point to Final Fantasy Agito 13. The mobile game was supposed to have connectivity features with Final Fantasy 13 for the PS3.

Of course, FF13 character designer Tetsuya Nomura has also said before that Final Fantasy Agito 13 would have to wait until 4G phones become widely available. Japanese company NTT DoCoMo plans to release the first commercial 4G network in 2010.

On Shelves This Week - Image 1

Modern Warfare Infinity Ward - Image 1Last week saw the release of gaming’s sleeper hits, which include Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, as well as some commercial successes like Nintendo’s phenomenal Wii Fit. This week won’t see any flash-bang releases, but these new titles are no less deserving of gamers’ attention and game time.

PC gamers will finally get Bioware’s Mass Effect, while Mac users will get their own taste of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Computer, PS3, Xbox 360). With many exceptional ports coming out this week, it’s going to be fun and games for everyone, regardless of what machine you own. Let’s kick off this week’s list right now with…

Mass Effect. The Windows reiteration of BioWare’s oft-mentioned and highly-publicized title finally hits the shelves, giving Personal computer gamers a chance to experience Commander Shepard’s exploits in the well-written space opera wrought with interspecies relations gone awry.

Stronghold Crusader Extreme. Stronghold’s update to the Stronghold: Crusader expansion lends monarchs the capability to have a 10,000-strong army of warriors. New structures and missions are also added to this castle sim expansion.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Id Software’s first-person shooter for the Windows platform makes its way into the PS3 and Xbox 360 territory. The wars between the Global Defense Force and the Strogg are given a spin on the console releases, which have slight differences that set them apart from other versions.

Everyone’s Pokemon Ranch. It’s nigh impossible for Nintendo to offer a new gaming service without Pokemon, so – not surprisingly – the WiiWare gets its own Pokemon title. In Everyone’s Pokemon Ranch, players can collect Pokemon and keep them in a ranch. There’s also a neat bonus: if you play Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, there’s an option for you to transfer your Pokemon from your DS for you to tend in your own Poke-ranch.

  • Wii – May 26, 2008
  • Nintendo

Death Jr. II: Root of Evil. DJ and Pandora’s adventure finally gets ported to the Nintendo Wii console. Join Death Jr. and his friend as they hunt down Furi, the evil entity borne out of a cocoon that was supposed to be used for their science experiment in this crazy platformer.

Final Fantasy Chocobo Square Enix - Image 1Fiscal year 2007 is certainly not the ideal fiscal year for Square Enix, which suffered a significant drop on revenues and earnings. According to their report, Square Enix’s sales slumped by 9.8 percent to only 146.5 billion yen (or US 1.4 billion), compared to the 31.3 percent gain that they posted for fiscal year 2006.

They managed to post net income worth 2.9 billion yen, or US 89 million.

The downturn is not only attributed to Square Enix’s console gaming. The company’s main online title, Final Fantasy XI (PC, Xbox 360) managed to reach 500,000 subscribers, but the revenues garnered from Square Enix’s overall on the internet gaming arm also got hit with a drop of 12 billion yen (or US 116 million).

However, things will eventually turn for the superior if everything goes as planned for the company. Square Enix has tagged the fiscal year of 2007 as a period of transition, anticipating a revenue rebound of 8.5 percent worth 160 billion yen, or US 1.5 billion.

With this development, will Square Enix still push through with their plan to expand into Western territories? If anything, the company intends to go into new frontiers into order to improve their output. “We need to go beyond traditional Square Enix,” stated Squeenix president Yoichi Wada. But how to they exactly plan to do that? Do stay tuned for updates.

StarCraft II - Zerg's Baneling - Image 1

Those who have been following coverage of Blizzard’s upcoming RTS StarCraft II would know that the Zerg have changed (quite literally) since the events of the Brood War. The Zerg have evolved during the StarCraft universe’s relative calm period-slash-arms race. We’ll be meeting the Zerg’s new unit today: the Baneling.

The Baneling is a new mutation of the Zergling, and looks like an… overgrown tick. It’s bloated with explosive chemicals and can’t walk so they basically roll to get to places. Their purpose in StarCraft II’s battlefields are simple: They go kamikaze (read: suicide bombs) on the Zerg’s enemies. Take note that they are highly effective against ground forces and buildings.

You’ve seen the Mario mod. You’ve seen Cloud Strife, Master Chief, and Marcus Fenix, even. Now for something definitely cooler. Like a couple degrees Fahrenheit cooler. With Epic Games allowing user-created mods for Unreal Tournament III on the PS3 and Personal computer, some of the fans’ creativity let loose with wild abandon.

Here we have a new mod from the Snowreal team: a snowboarding mod for UT3! Grab a board and slip and slide down that snowy slope – heck, you can even do tricks in the air! There are two game modes available in the archive. The download is about 40MB only and is available for the Personal computer (below) and PS3 (via the source link).

To see the mod in action, here’s the trailer that the dev team’s come up with:

Thanks to Steve519 for the cool tip!

mini-ITX machine inside GTA 4 Special Edition deposit box - Image 1

It shouldn’t be all of a surprise, given the size of the mini-ITX form factor. But a safety deposit box – and a Grand Theft Auto IV (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360) Special Edition one at that? That’s what mini-ITX’s modders squeezed a VIA EPIA-M series motherboard into on their recently concluded modding project dubbed “The GTA PC.”

Mark Harris, who would usually throw away unneeded extras from collector’s edition packages, plucked a VIA EPIA-ME6000G from another ITX chassis and found it to be just one centimeter short of the shortest edge of the GTA 4 deposit box collectible.

Another huge plus was that the longer side was especially longer than the board’s other dimensions, and would leave enough room for other essentials. With appropriate cutouts from the box, he snugly fit the 600 MHz, silent code-cruncher close to the rear of the box (where the fulcrum of the flip-top cover was).

Just above the motherboard, underneath the cover and to the back of the box, lay the a teeny power circuit that would feed the PC with much needed juice from an external power supply. That left plenty of room at the front of the box for Harris’ mini-drive and wiring for the board’s packaged connector headers.

The mini-drive – a mod of a 1 GB compact flash memory card slotted into an IDE circuit – was placed near the front end, but due to the length of the header cables, the header was mounted to the right, and on top of the board. A hole for a 20-mm AC DC fan is cut out at the front, left portion of the box to serve as ventilation.

And just in case things get warm inside, additional cooling as attached on top of the fanless CPU heatsink. You can plow through the rest of the visual aids at the source provided below. Wicked sick, huh?
