Want to win a chance to beta test the upcoming Cryptic Studios MMO Star Trek Online? Well, the developers are currently running a contest on the game’s official web site for a chance to do just that. And it all begins with that image you see above this news post.
Cryptic is asking folks to take a look at that alien world and imagine what life might be like on such a planet. To enter the contest, folks submit a quick story (no more that 500 words) about live on that planet. Contest entries must be turned in by Jan. 29. They will be judged and the winner will have a guaranteed beta testing slot for the game itself.

The independent PC gaming field continues to expand and develop. One such new developer is Black Jacket Studios, a small operation out of Portland formed by former members of GarageGames. They decided to break away to create their own game and now they have revealed details and screenshots from their first title, Metal Drift.
The futuristic driving-action game puts players in a “hover-tank” in a first person viewpoint. Metal Drift is multiplayer oriented with 12 supported players in a stadium setting and support for 15 weapons and items. Plans are to offer downloadable add-ons for the game as well. There’s no word on when the game will be released but the game’s web site indicates that it might be launched on the free-to-play InstantAction.com site.

In about a half-hour, we will have a new President of the US. So it makes sense that some folks are taking advantage of the opportunity to promote new games and game deals. One of these companies is IGS who is releasing a new PC game called Commander in Chief. Developed by French based Eversim the title was previously released in Europe as Mission President. It allows players to take over as the leader of any country on Earth. You can create a Cabinet to help run the government and then makes decisions on military, economic, social and other issues.
Also this day, the Democracy 2 web site is offering a one-day on the internet sale of their political sim game from developer Positech Games. You can purchase and download the full version for just $9.99, a 50 percent discount from its usual price. You can download a free demo of the game right here at Large Download.

We gave you a glimpse into the future of the America’s Army franchise late last year but today the US Army has now officially announced their plans to release America’s Army 3, the next full version of their long running free multiplayer shooter game. This is the first major new version of the title since the original was released way back in 2002. The Unreal Engine 3 based game is scheduled for release later this year.
Like the original, America’s Army 3 was designed to be a recruitment tool for the US Army and as such the game will let the player follow a recruit through basic training as an Infantry soldier (a second role, the combat medic, will be added later this year). After going through Basic Training in the game’s single player modes players can take their characters and go through additional training to unlock more weapons and abilities. Of course America’s Army 3 will also have multiplayer as well and players can use their persistent characters into the online field as well.
As with the original game players can expect America’s Army 3 to expand over the years with new maps, missions, features and more. The game’s official web site has now launched and is now taking sign-ups to beta test the game. Hopefully we will get more info on a specific release date soon. In the meantime you can check out the game’s system requirements after the jump.
Update: We have added three more screenshots to the gallery. They do not appear on the America’s Army 3 web site and show off two more levels (one for Ranch and two for Impact)

Mini Ninjas represents quite a shift for the Io Interactive, the development studio famous for the Hitman series and infamous for coming out with Kane & Lynch. It looks like gritty guts and gore will be traded in for a cuter approach. This trailer doesn’t show any gameplay, but a bunch of little ninjas taking on giant sized danger sounds like an appealing concept.

Blizzard is using Inauguration Day in the US to release the latest patch for their hit MMO World of Warcraft, ensuring that millions of people around the world will be so distracted they will miss the chance to see the 44th president of the US take the oath of office live.
Our sister site WoW Insider has the details on what the 3.0.8. patch contains. While it’s the first patch released since the launch of the game’s second expansion pack Wrath of the Lich King this new update has few content additions. One of the more interesting new features is support for Nvidia’s newly announced 3D Vision glasses which allow players to view a number of games in 3D (if they have the right monitor).

Ubisoft wants to expand the Tom Clancy brand of techno-military games. In 2008 they released Tom Clancy’s EndWar, a console RTS game that got praise for its voice control feature but slammed for its poor gameplay. The publisher is hoping for better luck with their next game in the franchise, Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X.
Scheduled for released this quarter for the PC and other platforms, Ubisoft is ramping up its promotion of the game with some new screenshots that we have added to our gallery. The near-future flying action game is looking pretty sweet in these new visuals and we hope to get some hands-on time with the game before its release.

The series will be co-written by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti with artwork by Darick Robertson, best known for his work on Transmetropolitan and the current super hero title The Boys. The story follows a set of New York City cops who are apparently tracking the shape-shifting main character. The first issue will have a variant cover by superstar artist Jim Lee (shown above).

Relic and THQ may have announced today that Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II has gone gold and will ship to stores on Feb. 19, but the developer already has plans for the game’s post-release updates. The game’s official community site has some hints about those plans via a Q&A with the game’s producer Mark Noseworthy.
Noseworthy states that within a week after Dawn of War II ships, “…we’ll be adding two additional multiplayer maps to the game.” He adds that that they will work with Microsoft to offer a number of updates to the game via Games For Windows Live Marketplace. While some of these updates will be free, it appears that others will be of a premium (i.e. paid) nature.
The upcoming multiplayer beta, which begins on Wednesday, will also allow THQ and Relic to put in some multiplayer balance changes to the full game for a planned “day zero” patch that will be released the same day the retail game ships.
