An event like the inauguration is a great excuse for the FBI to roll out all of its super-expensive security gear, like a truck you can explode a live bomb in without hurting anyone.

New Scientist has a full gallery, but my favorite is definitely the aforementioned truck. The Bomb Containment Vessel can be used to transport a live bomb safely, and it’s strong enough to have the bomb explode in its belly if need be. It won’t be used, in all likelihood, but it sure is fun to know it’s there. [New Scientist via Dvice]

Using her Kodak*, Malia grabs a shot (or maybe video) of her father giving the Inaugural Address today.

* On a side note, Kodak is one of the last standing American camera manufacturers, alongside Polaroid. It’s like the Cadillac limo for Obamas under 16.

Good work, Peek ad wizards: in honor of Barack Obama Day, anyone living at a 1600 address in the states can get a free Peek. There are deals for the rest of us, too.

For the next 44 hours, those at 1600 houses (White or otherwise) can get said free Peek, and everyone can get the email-only handheld for $44.44. Are they doing this to rub Barack’s nose in his loss of the superior email device? The cleverness is just too much.

Anyhoo, if their lifetime service deal didn’t get you, maybe this will. [Peek]

Because sometimes Aretha Franklin wears a hat to the inauguration that words simply cannot describe.

Obama will soon be sworn into office. Earlier this morning, before stepping in front of the pulsing millions, there was a quieter ceremony signaling the transfer of power: He received the nuclear launch codes.

A great story from George Stephanopolous: Before coming onstage, before going to church this morning, he went to his national security briefing, as he has for the last couple of months. What made this different from every other briefing though, is that at the end, a man with a briefcase handcuffed to his wrist told Obama how to launch a nuclear strike using the codes inside.

Obama won’t get the card to launch the nukes until he is officially sworn in, but as George Stephanopolous remarks, “the true transfer of power has begun.” [ABC News, Image: MSNBC/AP]

There have been other USB devices designed to combat stress, but this version is the only one that allows you to virtually punch and strangle your enemies.

Apparently, squeezing, twisting and punching this oddly shaped “ball” will transfer the action to your computer screen. In other words, if you squeeze the ball, a photo of your boss on the screen will also be temporarily “squeezed.” The same goes for any work you might be doing—like an unwelcome email or spreadsheet. It also features strength and squeeze games to help you pass the time at the office. Info on pricing and availability have not been made available.

Helicopters are so last century. The future is in Mono Tiltrotors, apparently, and AeroCopter is about to develop a scale-model flight demonstrator prototype of one.

Seeking funding to support the work, the Boston, Massachusetts-based-AeroCopter’s MTR car has a single turbine driving a ducted fan pusher propeller and the electromagnetically driven 8.2m (27ft)-diameter ring that encircles the fuselage. Lift is generated by the rotor blades of the ring, which has counter-rotating upper and lower halves. A driveshaft linking the ring to the turbine uses permanent magnets to turn the ring, which has many more magnets located at short intervals around its circumference. Once at 1,000ft (305m) altitude the ring is tilted through 87° and locked in place.

AeroCopter has designed a 1,320kg (2,900lb) two-seat personal air car with a cruise speed of at least 220kt (405km/h) and a range of 555km (300nm). There’s also an unmanned air car version.

That’s not a typo. You can celebrate the inauguration the old fashioned way, with a spycam/DVR belt buckle featuring a visage that in no way resembles our future President.

Obaba Buckle DVR a handsome black man face have a hidden camera and a micro DVR built in…This Buckle was originally carved in a WOOD but we changed this beautiful master piece of work in aluminium mould, now it looks even better and beautiful fashionable belt buckle. you can wear it as a normal belt on your Jeans yet it can record audio and video of your spy need.

Stand aside Shepard Fairey, there’s a new sheriff in town. [Spy Camera via Red Ferret]
